Recognizing Signs of a Sprinkler Leak
In any case of flooding or water damage, the sooner that you can identify the problem, the less problems you’ll experience. Here are a few warning signs to help Utah homeowner’s identify problems with improper irrigation:
- Lower pressure than usual: This is an obvious sign, but it could be difficult to spot if it happens gradually. Most sprinkler systems will have a meter that tells you what the pressure level is, but you can also check regularly with just a glance if you find a way to mark how high the sprinkler’s stream is supposed to be.
- Spikes in the water bill: If your monthly bill is higher than expected, and continues to be so, it’s possible that excess water is being wasted through a leak in the system.
- Soil erosion: Eroded soil around an irrigation head could mean that that head is running overtime. If you find divots or canyons in your yard, check the sprinkler heads surrounding the area to see if they’re producing extra water.
- Puddles and muddy patches: A broken irrigation head will leak excess water, usually causing puddled water in the yard.
- Trickling water: If water continues to trickle out of an irrigation head, even though the system is turned off, it’s possible that debris in the system is preventing the diaphragm from closing, causing water to continuously leak.
